Blood markers linked to brain and nerve problems in long COVID

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Blood proteomic markers may help identify neurologic long COVID and suggest druggable pathways.

Evidence

This plasma proteomics case-control analysis of 48 non-hospitalized Neuro-PASC patients, 20 convalescent controls, and 24 healthy controls measured over 7000 proteins and found marker combinations including C5a, TGFβ1, and Gliomedin differentiated Neuro-PASC with 94% sensitivity and 86% specificity.

Caveat

The biomarker panels were derived from a small case-control cohort and expanded combinations approached near-perfect accuracy without external validation, raising overfitting concerns.
