Low BMAL1 levels may increase the risk of chest artery bulges and tears

Updated

Abstract

Essence

BMAL1 insufficiency may increase thoracic aortic aneurysm and dissection risk by promoting vascular smooth muscle cell apoptosis through REV-ERBalpha/c-MYC signaling.

Evidence

This mechanistic translational study found lower BMAL1 in aortas from TAAD patients and BAPN-treated mice, while BMAL1 haploinsufficiency worsened BAPN-induced TAAD and BMAL1 or REV-ERBalpha activation reduced it in mice.

Caveat

The causal and treatment evidence comes mainly from a chemically induced mouse model and cell assays, not from a clinical intervention in people.
