Brain health score linked to eye structure and metabolism in UK Biobank data

Updated

Abstract

Higher brain care scores (BCS) are associated with thicker neuroretinal layers and a reduced retinal age gap in 28,657 participants.

  • Higher BCS is linked to increased thickness in neuroretinal and photoreceptor layers.
  • A 5-unit increase in BCS correlates with a smaller difference between predicted retinal age and chronological age.
  • Exploratory analyses suggest metabolic patterns involving lipids and branched-chain amino acids may mediate retinal thickness.
  • Thicker retinal layers may indicate more favorable retinal structural health associated with better brain care.
