How branched-chain amino acids in sow diets during lactation relate to growth of mothers and piglets

Updated

Abstract

A meta-regression analysis of 34 publications and 43 trials indicates that branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) are associated with sow and litter growth performance.

  • Significant predictor variables for litter average daily gain (ADG) include the number of weaned pigs per litter, net energy (NE), standardized ileal digestible (SID) lysine, crude protein (CP), sow average daily feed intake (ADFI), and the ratios of Val:Lys, Ile:Lys, and Leu:Val.
  • For sow body weight change, important predictors are litter size at 24 hours, sow ADFI, and the ratios of Leu:Lys and Ile + Val:Leu.
  • The prediction model for sow ADFI identifies Leu:Trp, SID lysine, NE, CP, and Leu:Lys as significant variables.
  • Overall, BCAA may influence litter growth, sow body weight change, and feed intake during lactation, but their impact is smaller compared to other dietary components.
