Buyang Huanwu Decoction may stabilize weak artery plaques by affecting gut bacteria, inflammation signals, and cell cleanup processes

Updated

Abstract

A total of 31 major active components were identified in Buyang Huanwu Decoction (BYHWD).

  • BYHWD significantly reduced the vulnerable plaque area in a mouse model of atherosclerosis.
  • The treatment decreased the expression of inflammatory cytokines linked to atherosclerosis.
  • Inhibitory effects on proteins associated with inflammation and mitochondrial function were observed in aortic tissues.
  • BYHWD regulated gut microbiota abundance and reduced serum trimethylamine-N-oxide levels.
  • The treatment up-regulated the expression of proteins related to gut microbiota and bile acid metabolism.
