Calcium-sensing receptor may increase heart tissue scarring caused by high blood sugar through the TGF-β1/Smads pathway in heart support cells

Updated

Abstract

In type 1 diabetic rats, evident collagen (Col)‑I and ‑III deposition was observed after 12 weeks.

  • Calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) expression increased in cardiac fibroblasts from diabetic rats.
  • High-glucose conditions and CaSR activation were associated with elevated levels of transforming growth factor (TGF)‑β1 and other signaling molecules.
  • Inhibition of CaSR reduced intracellular calcium levels and the proliferation of cardiac fibroblasts.
  • The findings suggest that CaSR may play a role in the development of myocardial fibrosis in diabetes.
