Camellioside A may activate cell cleanup pathways to reduce UVB-related skin aging

Updated

Abstract

Camellioside A (CA) significantly ameliorated wrinkle formation and dermal structural damage in a chronic UVB-induced photoaging mouse model.

  • Chronic UVB exposure is linked to skin photoaging processes such as oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction.
  • CA was identified as a key bioactive component of Camellia chekiangoleosa that may counteract photoaging effects.
  • In UVB-stressed human foreskin fibroblasts and NIH-3T3 cells, CA reduced cellular senescence and improved mitochondrial function.
  • CA activates the mitochondrial deacetylase SIRT3, which is essential for its effects on mitochondrial quality control.
  • SIRT3 activation promotes deacetylation and nuclear translocation of FOXO3, a transcription factor that enhances PINK1 expression.
  • Knockdown of SIRT3 diminished the protective effects of CA and disrupted FOXO3-PINK1 signaling and mitophagy.
