A cane toad enzyme changes natural indole compounds into psychedelic amines

Updated

Abstract

A newly identified enzyme may help produce psychedelic compounds in toads.

  • Psychedelic compounds like DMT and bufotenin are found in certain toads.
  • A novel enzyme, RmNMT, was discovered in the cane toad (Rhinella marina).
  • Related enzymes in other frog species were found to be inactive, suggesting unique biosynthesis in toads.
  • RmNMT can produce various substituted indolethylamines, which may be useful for further research.
  • Primary amines showed better binding to the 5-HT receptor than tertiary amines.
  • N,N-dimethylation may help protect certain derivatives from breakdown in the liver.
