Cannabidiol affects brain changes, gut bacteria imbalance, and alcohol intake in a mouse model of fetal alcohol disorder

Abstract

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) model mice exhibited increased anxiety- and depressive-like behavior and gut microbiota dysbiosis.

  • Perinatal Alcohol Exposure (PAE) may lead to behavioral changes linked to emotional disturbances and altered brain molecular profiles.
  • Sex-dependent differences were observed in synaptic density and the availability of certain brain receptors in response to PAE.
  • Chronic administration of cannabidiol (CBD) improved or normalized emotional and molecular disturbances caused by PAE.
  • Females exposed to the FASD model showed a higher motivation to consume alcohol, an effect that CBD treatment eliminated.
  • The study suggests that the gut microbiota may play a role in the emotional and behavioral outcomes associated with PAE.
