Carvedilol reduces high body temperature and muscle damage caused by Ecstasy in animals

Updated

Abstract

MDMA induced a 35-fold increase in norepinephrine levels in a rat model.

  • MDMA administration resulted in a 20-fold increase in epinephrine and a 2.4-fold increase in dopamine levels.
  • Propranolol and nadolol did not affect the thermogenic response when given before MDMA.
  • Carvedilol, administered either before or after MDMA, effectively prevented hyperthermia.
  • When given 1 hour post-MDMA, carvedilol completely reversed established hyperthermia.
  • Carvedilol also significantly reduced MDMA-induced creatine kinase release, indicating potential muscle damage.
