Capsaicin may reduce brain inflammation and cell death in sepsis by boosting mitochondrial cleanup through the BNIP3/NIX pathway

Updated

Abstract

A single administration of capsaicin reduced the mortality rate in mice with sepsis.

  • Mice with sepsis showed significant cognitive dysfunction and reduced TRPV1 expression in the hippocampus.
  • Repeated capsaicin administration improved cognitive performance in the novel object recognition test and Morris water maze tasks.
  • Capsaicin treatment decreased microglial activation, proinflammatory cytokine release, and neuronal apoptosis in sepsis-affected mice.
  • Increased autophagic flux and changes in specific protein expressions were noted after capsaicin treatment in comparison to CLP-induced sepsis.
