How the cell cycle controls CK1δ protein levels, self-inhibition, and activity

Updated

Abstract

CK1δ activity and abundance are coordinated in a cell cycle-dependent manner.

  • CK1δ is stable during G1 when assembled, while free active CK1δ is degraded.
  • In S phase, unassembled CK1δ appears to evade degradation, possibly aiding DNA damage signaling.
  • Mitotic entry triggers downregulation of phosphatases, enhancing CK1δ (auto)phosphorylation and autoinhibition.
  • This mechanism helps maintain a reserve of CK1δ to quickly restore the post-mitotic state.
