Abstract

Holocrine secretion involves the complete conversion of sebocyte cells into sebum.

  • Sebocytes undergo a process of terminal differentiation that leads to programmed cell death.
  • During holocrine secretion, the entire contents of sebocytes are released as sebum.
  • In vivo studies indicate that lysosomal deoxyribonuclease 2 (DNase 2) plays a significant role in degrading nuclear and mitochondrial DNA during this process.
  • Tight junctions may influence the spatial localization of holocrine secretion within sebaceous glands.
  • Autophagy is suggested to regulate the process of holocrine cell death.
