Abstract

The mean DNA methylation age estimate varied substantially across nine different human tissue types.

  • Each epigenetic clock showed significant variation in mean age estimates depending on the tissue type.
  • Correlations between DNA methylation clocks and chronological age differed among tissues, with blood samples typically showing the strongest correlation.
  • Strong correlations existed between clock estimates across different tissues, although some correlation remained after accounting for chronological age.
  • In lung tissue, smoking was generally associated with an increase in epigenetic age.
