Updated

Abstract

The prevalence of high total cholesterol among the very old was 75% at age 70.

  • Cholesterol levels did not show a consistent association with mortality from age 70 to 90.
  • Statin use increased from 0% at age 70 to 45.4% at age 85.
  • Survival rates were higher for those using statins compared to non-users at ages 78 to 85 and 85 to 90.
  • After adjustment for various factors, total cholesterol was not linked to mortality risk across the assessed age groups.
  • Statins were associated with a decreased mortality risk from age 85 to 90.
