Long-term REM sleep loss causes mania- and OCD-like behaviors and lowers brain support protein in female rats

Updated

Abstract

Chronic short-term REM sleep deprivation for 14 days induced hyperactivity and OCD-like behavior in female rats.

  • REM sleep deprivation resulted in decreased anxiety, depressive-like behavior, and pain sensitivity.
  • Impairment of passive avoidance memory was observed following REM sleep deprivation.
  • Lithium at doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg reduced the effects of REM sleep deprivation on hyperactivity and OCD-like behavior.
  • Lithium (100 mg/kg) increased brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels in control and sham REM sleep deprivation rats without altering behavior.
  • Chronic REM sleep deprivation may serve as a model for mania and irritability in female rats.
