Fluoxetine and Butyrate May Relieve Stress-Related Constipation and Change Gut Bacteria

Abstract

Essence

Fluoxetine improved stress-linked depression and constipation in mice, and adding appeared to strengthen gut motility, inflammation, and barrier effects.

Evidence

This was a mouse model experiment using chronic unpredictable mild stress with functional constipation, behavioral testing, gut motility measures, histology, serotonin and hormone assays, inflammatory markers, 16S microbiota profiling, and fecal short-chain fatty acid measurement.

Caveat

The findings are preclinical mouse data, so the proposed fluoxetine-butyrate synergy is not evidence of human therapeutic benefit.
