Eighteen primary human studies indicate that chronodisruption may influence weight outcomes after metabolic bariatric surgery.

  • Late bedtime, poor sleep quality, evening chronotype, high social jetlag, and late meal timing are each associated with less favorable weight outcomes.
  • Shift work may also contribute to accelerated weight gain following metabolic bariatric surgery.
  • Most studies did not account for important factors like surgical type, caloric intake, and depression, which could affect weight outcomes.
  • Surgery does not seem to resolve the underlying misalignment of circadian rhythms.
  • The impact of light at night on obesity risk in post-bariatric surgery populations has not yet been studied.
  • Current evidence does not sufficiently support the routine clinical use of chronobiological profiling in bariatric evaluations.
