How sleep timing and intelligence relate to primary school success through self-discipline, sleep habits, and motivation

Updated

Abstract

In a study of 1,125 10-year-old children, intelligence emerged as the strongest predictor of academic grades.

  • Morningness orientation is positively related to intelligence, conscientiousness, and learning objectives.
  • Eveningness orientation is associated with avoidance of performance objectives and work avoidance.
  • An earlier midpoint of sleep, along with conscientiousness and intelligence, correlates with better academic performance.
  • Motivation, younger age, and an earlier sleep midpoint are positively related to good grades.
  • The study indicates that the link between evening orientation and academic achievement exists in primary school children.
