How the circadian proteins PER2 and CRY interact with the core clock proteins BMAL1 and CLOCK

Updated

Abstract

Both PER2 and CRY proteins interact with BMAL1, while only PER2 interacts with CLOCK.

  • CRY proteins exhibit a higher affinity for BMAL1 compared to PER2.
  • PER2, CRY1, and CRY2 bind to different regions of the BMAL1 protein.
  • Interactions of PER and CRY proteins with the BMAL1-CLOCK complex may affect transcriptional activation.
  • CRY proteins, particularly CRY1, are suggested to be stronger repressors than PER proteins.
