Abstract

Essence

In Qatar, both and were linked to type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, with stronger associations for metabolic syndrome.

Evidence

This nationally representative cross-sectional study of 2523 respondents in Qatar found MetS prevalence of 6.8% and CRD prevalence of 2.4%; MetS was strongly associated with T2DM (OR 19.08, 95% CI 10.87-33.50) and CVDs (OR 5.51, 95% CI 2.33-13.03), while CRD was also associated with T2DM (OR 10.32, 95% CI 4.60-23.17) and less clearly with CVDs (OR 2.01, 95% CI 0.92-4.42).

Caveat

Because this was a cross-sectional study and the CRD definition combined short sleep with depression and metabolic features, it cannot establish prediction or causality and the CVD association for CRD was imprecise.
