Essence

Patients with idiopathic hypersomnia and narcolepsy type 1 showed intact circadian melatonin timing, with sleep-wake differences not explained by circadian disruption alone.

Evidence

A controlled nap-protocol study compared 12 idiopathic hypersomnia patients, 12 narcolepsy type 1 patients, and 12 healthy controls across 10 sleep-wake cycles with linear mixed-model analyses.

Caveat

The sample was small, young, and protocol-driven, and the unexpected high rate in controls complicates interpretation.
