Daily melatonin patterns and related factors in ICU patients

Updated

Abstract

Abnormal melatonin acrophase was found in 52.6% of 190 ICU patients.

  • Melatonin secretion rhythm disturbances are prevalent in critically ill patients.
  • Use of analgesics and average night-time interruptions are independently related to melatonin acrophase.
  • Melatonin amplitude is associated with patient age and average night-time interruptions.
  • Routine assessment of pain levels is recommended to enhance patient care.
  • Limiting non-urgent medical procedures at night could help maintain circadian rhythm in ICU patients.
