Daily Cycle of Blood Vessel Function in Middle-Aged Adults

Updated

Abstract

VEF was significantly impaired during the morning hours (P=0.04).

  • Malondialdehyde adducts and endothelin-1 levels showed circadian rhythms with increases in the morning and peaks around noon (P≤0.01).
  • Systolic and diastolic blood pressure were rhythmic, with peaks occurring in the late afternoon (P=0.005 and P=0.04, respectively).
  • The endogenous circadian system is associated with morning impairment in vascular endothelial function and increased biomarkers linked to oxidative stress.
  • This morning impairment in VEF may contribute to a higher risk of cardiovascular events during these hours.
