Widespread loss of core biological clock genes was observed in 96 perciform species, particularly in high-latitude environments.

  • Significant lineage-specific loss of core clock genes was noted in polar and deep-sea perciform suborders.
  • Higher latitude species exhibited an amplified trend of clock gene loss.
  • Metabolic phenotyping revealed a consistent absence of circadian metabolic oscillations in three notothenioid species during late austral fall.
  • This genomic change may indicate a functional loss of rhythmicity in perciform fishes.
  • The findings suggest that early diversification of perciformes may have been facilitated by a release from circadian constraints.
