Cistanche tubulosa Extract May Improve Learning and Memory in Rats Exposed to Low Oxygen at High Altitude

Updated

Abstract

Cistanche tubulosa ethanol extract (CTE) significantly improved cognitive function in male rats exposed to high-altitude hypoxia.

  • CTE enhanced the activities of antioxidant enzymes SOD and GSH while reducing levels of MDA in both the hippocampus and serum.
  • CTE modulated the expression of proteins in the PI3K/Akt/mTOR-HIF-1α signaling pathway in the hippocampus.
  • CTE altered gut microbiota diversity and increased beneficial bacteria, which may influence cognitive function through the gut-brain axis.
