The clock gene Cycle controls daily metabolic rhythms specifically in egg-laying female Culex pipiens mosquitoes

Updated

Abstract

Twenty-seven metabolites showed synchronized oscillations in non-diapausing mosquitoes, compared to only eleven in diapausing females.

  • Non-diapausing wildtype mosquitoes exhibit larger metabolic oscillations than diapausing mosquitoes.
  • Knocking out the CYCLE gene in mosquitoes leads to significant metabolic disruptions, regardless of daylength.
  • Wildtype females demonstrate synchronized metabolite oscillations, while those with the CYCLE knockout show loss of synchronicity.
  • This study highlights differences in metabolic patterns between diapausing and non-diapausing Northern house mosquitoes.
