Clonidine for calming and pain relief in newborns on ventilators

Updated

Abstract

One trial involving 112 infants assessed the use of clonidine during mechanical ventilation in newborns.

  • No significant difference was found in all-cause death during hospitalization between the clonidine and placebo groups.
  • The median duration of mechanical ventilation was 7.1 days for the clonidine group compared to 5.8 days for the placebo group, with a P-value of 0.070.
  • There were no differences in the duration of stay in the intensive care unit between the two groups.
  • Sedation and analgesia scores were lower in the clonidine group during the first 72 hours of treatment.
  • The quality of the evidence is low due to the limited number of events and the reliance on a single study.
