Slow-Wave Brain Stimulation During Sleep May Improve Memory Generalization by Changing Natural Brain Rhythms

Abstract

Active slow-wave transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) during sleep enhanced target detection accuracy for generalized images by approximately 20% compared to sham stimulation.

  • Slow-wave oscillations during sleep are associated with the consolidation of memories.
  • Closed-loop tACS was used to augment endogenous slow-wave oscillations during sleep.
  • Participants showed improved performance on tasks involving generalized images after receiving tACS.
  • No significant improvement was observed for tasks involving repeated images.
  • Increased slow-wave power and its coupling with spindle activity correlated with enhanced memory performance.
  • A transient refractory period was noted following tACS, where slow-wave power temporarily decreased but still related positively to behavioral improvements.
