CNTN4 Gene as a Possible Link Between Gut Bacteria and Brain in Autism and ADHD

Updated

Abstract

Seventeen gut microbial species are associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and 27 with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

  • Causal associations were identified between specific gut microbial taxa and the risk of ASD and ADHD.
  • Reverse analysis indicated potential associations between ASD and certain species, but no reverse causality was found for ADHD.
  • Five novel genes involved in host-microbiome interactions were identified as common to both ASD and ADHD.
  • CNTN4 was highlighted as a candidate gene potentially relevant to both disorders.
