Cocoa’s effects on blood pressure

Abstract

Flavanol-rich chocolate and cocoa products may cause a small 2 mmHg reduction in blood pressure in mainly healthy adults over the short term.

  • A total of 35 trials with 1804 participants were analyzed, showing a significant decrease in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
  • Systolic blood pressure was reduced by an average of 4 mmHg in hypertensive individuals, while prehypertensive individuals also showed a trend towards reduction.
  • No significant blood pressure reduction was observed in normotensive individuals, suggesting that baseline blood pressure may influence the effects of cocoa.
  • The quality of evidence regarding the blood pressure-lowering effect is moderate due to variability among trials that could not be fully explained.
  • Cocoa products were generally well-tolerated, with adverse effects reported by a small percentage of participants.
