Cognitive Aging and Brain Health Differences Between Highly Active and Less Active Older Adults

Updated

Abstract

Super movers (n = 358) had a 49% lower risk of incident cognitive impairment compared to nonsuper movers over follow-ups of 3.4 to 5.4 years.

  • Super movers aged ≥80 years tend to experience slower cognitive decline in both memory and non-memory domains.
  • Preserved hippocampal volume in specific subfields was observed in super movers.
  • Super movers demonstrated better cognitive function before death and had lower prevalence of Alzheimer disease and dementia.
  • No differences were found in postmortem dementia-related pathologies between super and nonsuper movers.
