How Brain Fog, Fatigue, Attention, and Memory Interact in Long COVID

Updated

Abstract

Among 24,095 participants, 548 reported ongoing symptoms consistent with Long COVID and showed significant deficits in sustained attention.

  • Participants with persistent post-COVID-19 symptoms exhibited notable impairments in sustained attention compared to those without infection.
  • Path analysis identified complex relationships linking features of COVID-19 (such as symptom duration and severity) with cognitive performance.
  • The model for Long COVID highlighted both direct effects of COVID-19 on attention and memory, as well as the influence of fatigue on cognitive performance.
  • 'Brain fog' was associated with a unique neurocognitive vulnerability connected to fatigue and lower performance in attention and memory tasks.
  • The impact of Long COVID on cognitive function appears to be heterogeneous, with higher-order cognitive processes like memory particularly susceptible.
