Combining Diabetes and Cholesterol Medications to Lower Heart Disease Risk

Updated

Abstract

4% of individuals using cardioprotective glucose-lowering drugs developed atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) over a mean follow-up of 3.2 years.

  • In a cohort of individuals with type 2 diabetes, the combined treatment of cardioprotective glucose-lowering drugs and statins showed a hazard ratio of 0.64 for ASCVD compared to those using dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors.
  • Statins alone were associated with a hazard ratio of 0.69 for ASCVD compared to dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors.
  • In a larger time-varying cohort, the hazard ratios for ASCVD were 0.67 for the combined treatment and 0.70 for statins alone compared with no cardioprotective drug.
  • 10% of individuals in the larger cohort developed ASCVD during a mean follow-up of 5.9 years.
