Common mental health problems and their link to diabetes in rural Bangladesh

Updated

Abstract

The prevalence of depression in rural Bangladesh among adults with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is 6.0%.

  • Participants with T2DM had nearly double the odds of experiencing depression compared to those without T2DM (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 1.93).
  • The odds of having comorbid depression and anxiety were also significantly higher in those with T2DM (aOR = 1.99).
  • No significant association was observed between T2DM and anxiety alone (aOR = 1.38).
  • Sociodemographic factors such as age, marital status, and employment were associated with the risk of common mental disorders.
