Using Control-Based Clustering to Identify New Balance Patterns in Movement Data After COVID-19

Updated

Abstract

Analysis of motion capture balance data from 140 participants highlights differences in postural control between post-COVID-19 individuals and healthy controls.

  • Post-COVID-19 participants exhibited distinct balance profiles compared to healthy controls, with 118 of 1366 contrast assignments (8.6%) classified as control-distant.
  • Quantum annealing methods effectively identified a selective subset of post-COVID-19 individuals with unique balance characteristics, while preserving the control group's structure.
  • Other clustering methods assigned a larger proportion of post-COVID-19 participants to the control-distant group, indicating variability in subgroup identification.
  • Frequency band profiles indicated that QUBO-derived assignments corresponded to distinct postural control patterns, especially in low-frequency sway and mid-low-frequency control bands.
  • The proposed approach serves as a hypothesis-generating tool for exploring neuromotor phenotyping in heterogeneous biomedical datasets.
