The study found 69.4% of women and 54.0% of men in the Punjabi Bhatia community in India were classified as overweight or obese.
- A significant prevalence of family history of coronary heart disease was observed in 19.9% of men and 21.6% of women.
- Sedentary habits were reported in 36.3% of men and 31.5% of women, while smoking or tobacco use was noted in 26.1% of men and 1.7% of women.
- Hypertension affected 51.3% of both men and women, and diabetes was present in 17.7% of men and 14.2% of women.
- The metabolic syndrome was identified in 36.2% of men and 47.8% of women, indicating a higher prevalence compared to other studies.
- Obesity was independently associated with increased risk factors for metabolic syndrome in both genders.
