Link Between ADHD and Problematic Internet or Video Gaming

Updated

Abstract

Individuals with internet gaming disorder (IGD) or gaming disorder (GD) have a higher prevalence of ADHD compared to those without these disorders.

  • The prevalence of ADHD is greater in individuals with IGD or GD than in the general gaming population.
  • Among those diagnosed with ADHD, there is an increased occurrence of IGD or GD compared to those without ADHD.
  • The criterion of 'functional impairment' within the nine IGD criteria shows low diagnostic accuracy for IGD or GD.
  • The overpathologizing of excessive gaming behaviors may relate to functional impairments associated with ADHD in individuals with GD.
