Disconnection of a Human-Only Brain Pathway Linked to Natural Social Perception in Schizophrenia

Updated

Abstract

Participants with schizophrenia exhibited a 4.4 decrease in connectivity in areas responsible for face-emotion processing.

  • Connectivity in the TPJ/posterior superior temporal sulcus areas is significantly lower in individuals with schizophrenia compared to healthy controls.
  • In healthy individuals, the shortest path for connectivity between visual and medial prefrontal theory-of-mind areas includes the TPJ-pSTS region.
  • In contrast, individuals with schizophrenia show a different connectivity path that bypasses the TPJ-pSTS and routes through the prefrontal cortex.
  • Movie-evoked activity in the posterior temporoparietal junction correlates with connectivity along the TPJ-pSTS pathway in both groups.
  • A stronger correlation is observed in schizophrenia between movie-evoked activity and connectivity along the prefrontal cortex pathway.
