How COVID-19 and Lockdowns May Affect the Mental Health of Children and Teens, with Advice

Updated

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted the mental health of children and adolescents, highlighting the need for targeted support.

  • Short-term and long-term mental health effects are associated with factors such as developmental age, educational status, and pre-existing conditions.
  • Children and adolescents from economically disadvantaged backgrounds may experience heightened vulnerabilities during the pandemic.
  • Quarantine and separation from parents are linked to increased anxiety and distress among young individuals.
  • There is a need for longitudinal studies to understand the ongoing psychological impacts and to improve mental health support services.
  • Recommendations include developing innovative mental health policies that integrate direct and digital collaboration among various health professionals.
