How COVID-19 and 2021 Health Guidelines Changed Public Views on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome on Twitter

Updated

Abstract

Over 906,000 tweets related to myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) were analyzed.

  • Approximately 47.2% of the tweets were neutral, 40.75% negative, and 12.05% positive.
  • The proportion of negative and positive tweets increased over time, while neutral tweets decreased significantly (P<.001).
  • Tweets about fibromyalgia highlighted similarities with ME/CFS, stigma, and a lack of effective treatments for both conditions.
  • Treatment-related tweets expressed frustration with the perception of ME/CFS as a mental illness and the need for supportive healthcare providers.
  • The 2021 UK NICE guidelines were viewed positively, as they validated ME/CFS as a biomedical disease and opposed graded exercise therapy.
  • Discussions around COVID-19 noted potential overlaps with ME/CFS, including claims of shared biological pathways and the absence of a cure.
