How COVID-19 Vaccines and Past Infections Lower Long COVID Risk Before and During Omicron

Abstract

Vaccine effectiveness against COVID-19 was 95% for two doses during the pre-Omicron period.

  • One-dose vaccine effectiveness against COVID-19 was 75% during the pre-Omicron period.
  • Vaccine effectiveness against long COVID was 91% for one dose and 87% for two doses during the pre-Omicron period.
  • During the Omicron period, booster dose effectiveness against COVID-19 dropped to 41% and to 57% against long COVID.
  • Vaccine effectiveness in those who were both vaccinated and previously infected ranged from 81% to 92% up to 9 months after the last immunization.
  • Vaccination may have prevented long COVID during the pre-Omicron period and reduced its risk by more than half after the Omicron variant emerged.
