Combined creatine and HMB supplements boost strength without increasing muscle size in active older adults

Updated

Abstract

In a trial with 30 older adults, 6 weeks of creatine monohydrate and β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate supplementation combined with a physical conditioning program improved multiple measures of functional strength.

  • Significant interactions were observed for various body composition metrics, including fat mass and muscle mass parameters (all p < 0.05).
  • The group receiving creatine and HMB showed reductions in fat mass and body fat percentage, while the placebo group showed opposite trends.
  • Improvements in functional strength outcomes included leg strength, arm flexion strength, upper-body endurance, and core endurance.
  • These strength improvements appeared to be largely independent of changes in muscle mass, indicating a potential neuromuscular mechanism.
