  • Cumulative exposure to critical incidents is linked to nightmares in police officers.
  • General work environment stress is strongly associated with poor overall sleep quality.
  • Sleep disturbances are closely related to posttraumatic stress symptoms and general mental health issues.
  • The study included 551 variable-shift and 182 stable day-shift police officers compared to 98 variable-shift and 232 stable day-shift control subjects.
