How Long-Term Obesity and Genetic Risk Are Linked to Aging in Older Chinese Adults

Abstract

Cumulative exposures to body mass index (cBMI) and waist circumference (cWC) are positively associated with biological aging metrics in 687 older adults (median age: 79.6 years).

  • Both cBMI and cWC are associated with increased biological age and physiological dysregulation in older adults.
  • Baseline obesity status shows a positive association with biological age but not with physiological dysregulation.
  • Genetic susceptibility to longevity may modify the relationship between cWC and biological age, with stronger associations in those with lower genetic risk.
  • Long-term obesity management could support healthier aging trajectories, particularly for older adults with low genetic susceptibility to longevity.
  • Findings may aid in developing risk stratification strategies that consider genetic factors in aging.
