Abstract

Curcumin may protect mitochondrial function in APOE4 mice by restoring autophagy and reducing apoptosis.

  • APOE4 expression is associated with decreased antioxidant capacity and respiratory function in primary astrocytes.
  • Mitochondrial damage and increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels were observed in cells with APOE4 expression.
  • Curcumin improved mitochondrial integrity and function, reducing damaged mitochondria and maintaining mitochondrial homeostasis.
  • Curcumin restored normal autophagic activity that was disrupted by oxidative stress.
  • The treatment with curcumin was linked to a reversal of early-stage apoptosis in the tested cells.
