Curcumin reduces lung aging caused by fine air pollution through the mTOR/S6K1 pathway

Updated

Abstract

Curcumin treatment improved lung function and reduced senescence markers in a murine model of PM2.5 exposure.

  • PM2.5 exposure increased levels of senescence markers (p16, p21, and SA-β-gal) and impaired lung function.
  • Elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress markers were observed following PM2.5 exposure.
  • Activation of the mTOR/S6K1 pathway was linked to PM2.5-induced lung senescence.
  • Curcumin treatment reduced oxidative stress markers and enhanced antioxidant enzyme activity.
  • Curcumin inhibited mTOR/S6K1 signaling, suggesting a mechanism for its protective effects against pulmonary senescence.
