Cycled hospital light and noise during early care and thinking skills at 2 years in very preterm infants

Abstract

Very preterm infants may benefit from cycled environmental light and noise during their early postnatal care.

  • These infants have an underdeveloped circadian rhythm due to gestational age and loss of maternal cues after birth.
  • Constant lighting and noise in neonatal intensive care may contribute to stress and disrupt circadian development.
  • Improved cognitive outcomes could result from introducing cycles of light and noise soon after birth until discharge.
