Plants tell time by syncing daily gene cycles to sunlight, shown in Arabidopsis

Updated

Abstract

The solar clock model predicts gene timing in plants across 11 different lighting regimes.

  • CAB2, TOC1, and LHY genes exhibited rhythmic behavior consistent with the solar clock model under non-24-hour cycles.
  • TOC1 expression peaked approximately 5.5 hours after midday, while CAB2 peaked near noon and LHY peaked around 7.5 hours after midnight.
  • The model accurately predicted the timing of gene expression regardless of the light and dark period combinations.
  • In short cycles that ended before LHY could be expressed, the model successfully forecasted its expression timing in the subsequent cycle.
  • The regulation of gene phases by the solar clock may allow plants to anticipate critical daily events like dawn and dusk.
