Danshensu may reduce heart damage from doxorubicin by lowering oxidative stress and protecting mitochondria through JNK pathway

Updated

Abstract

DSS supplementation improved survival rates and cardiac function in DOX-treated mice.

  • DSS reduced ventricular dysfunction and cardiac atrophy in animal models exposed to DOX.
  • In vitro, DSS enhanced cell viability and reduced oxidative stress in DOX-exposed heart cells.
  • DSS inhibited phosphorylation of a protein called JNK, which is involved in oxidative stress responses.
  • The treatment restored balance in mitochondrial dynamics by regulating proteins that control mitochondrial function.
  • DSS appears to mitigate cardiomyocyte apoptosis by preserving mitochondrial integrity and lowering reactive oxygen species.
